Old Union Township was formed in 1846, cobbled together from pieces of Dover Township and Stafford Township, which both have their own municipal courts. This was when the nearby land was still part of Monmouth County. It later joined the newer Ocean County in 1850. Other sections of Barnegat were ceded to Lacey TownshipOcean TownshipHarvey Cedars, and Long Beach Township. The name was changed from Union to Barnegat Township as of January 1, 1977
