Bayonne – New Jersey
Bayonne was initially established as a township in 1961 from portions of Bergen Township. It was incorporated as a city in 1869. It is located at the heart of the Port of New York and New Jersey. It is home to one of the state’s original 36 Carnegie Libraries.
As of the 2010 bureau, 63,204 people made their home in its 11 square miles territory. There were 16,051 families and about 27,800 housing units. Unofficial 2009 figures estimated the median house or condo value at $362,321. The January 2011 cost of living index was 23.6% higher than the national average.
The 2006-2010 American Community Survey of the Census Bureau estimated (with a 4%-8% margin of error) that the median household income was $53,587, and the median family income $66,077. Males had a median income 21% higher than females ($51,188 versus $42,097). The per capita income was $28,698). The principal ancestries are Italian (20.1%), Irish (18.8%), Polish (17.9%), German (6.1%), and Arab (3.8%). As of the 2010 census, the racial and ethnic composition was 69.21% White, 25.7% Hispanic or Latino, 8.86% African American, and 7.71% Asian. The percentage of foreign-born residents was above the state average (20.2% versus 17.5%).
Of the 25,237 households registered in the 2000 census, 29.5% had minors living with them. Less than half were married couples living together. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 36.4% and 31.6%. Female householders with no husband present represented 16.8%.
At the time of the 2010 census, the median age was 38.4 years. The age breakdown was 22.5% under 18, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% 65 years of age or older.
The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher were significantly below state levels (15.70% and 7.50% versus 20.65% and 12.05%). More than 17.0% had not completed high school versus 30.036% who had. Those with some college or associate degree were 20.72%.
The major industries in which males engaged from 2005 to 2009 were Transportation and warehousing (15%), Construction (11%), Retail trade (9%) and Public administration (8%). Females worked in Health care and social assistance (18%), Educational services (18%) and Retail trade (12%).
