Belmar is a borough with a population of between 5,794 and 6,045 inhabitants as of the latest census, 28.2% of whose residents are of Irish ancestry. It was originally known as Ocean Beach borough, later as City of Elcho borough and City of Belmar borough until it obtained its current name.

The borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles of which almost 60% is land.Belmar has three major thoroughfares: State Highways 35 and 71 and Ocean Avenue. New Jersey Transit Commuter Rail Line runs through the center of town. The borough is surrounded by water bodies on three sides: to the east the Atlantic Ocean, to the north Shark River Inlet and to the west Shark River. It owns the largest municipal Marina in the state and docks private and commercially-owned vessels.

The borough’s total crime risk index is 48% higher than the national index and almost double the state’s. The highest index is represented by the larceny risk at 296 vs. 62 for the state. The assault risk index and rape index are also high on this list. Likewise the motor vehicle theft risk index is slightly higher than the state’s. Regarding education, individuals 25 years old and over who have completed high school and some college are almost equal at roughly 23% each. Those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree total 24.33% and who have completed a graduate degree, at 13.05%, are both higher than the state and national averages.

The education enrollment figures for the population aged 3 and older are poor with 80.0% not enrolled in school and an overall education index of 87. The quality of life index of 106 is accounted for by the restaurant and amusement indexes. The median age of this borough’s population is 39.70 almost par with both the state and the national averages. Most of them fall within the range of 25 to 64 with an average of 12% in each age group. The population of Belmar is mostly white (88.13%) with a fairly large portion of Hispanics (9.91%) and Blacks or African Americans (3.50%). The average household size is 2.01, represented mostly by a single resident per household (44.55%.  Regarding vehicle ownership, almost half (48.76%) own at least one vehicle and 32.39% have two. Almost 3% own four or more vehicles.

The average household income at $82.350 is lower than the state average but slightly higher than the national one. However, the per capita household income is higher than the stage average and almost 50% higher than the national average. The Belmar Police Department has 21 regular full-time Police Officers and approximately 45 part-time summer Police Officers. The first fire engine of Belmar was acquired in 1889. Today, the Fire Department operates out of the three fire stations and has six modern fire-fighting apparatus and various support equipment.
