The Police Department currently has 26 full-time sworn officers, two civilian employees, seven crossing guards, and 13 Emergency Management volunteers.
The N.J. State Police Uniform Crime registered 154 major crimes in 2010. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 10.7 and a violent rate of 0.5. There were no murders. The reports included 3 rapes, 1 robbery, 3 assaults, 22 burglaries, 116 incidents of domestic violence, a2 bias crimes, and 26 cases of police force.
Branchburg – New Jersey
Branchburg Township was chartered in 1749. Its history predates the American Revolutionary War. It was incorporated in 1845 from portions of Bridgewater Township. It has 20.3 square miles, and ranks seventh in size among the 21 municipalities of Somerset County.
This township is home to the Little Red Schoolhouse, built in 1873 and is the last one-room school house in the county.
As of the 2010 census, 14,459 resided here. There were more than 4,000 families and about 5,400 housing units. The percentage of renters is below the state average (9% versus 34%). Unofficial 2008 data show that the median contract rent for apartments was $1,312, and the estimated median house or condo value $580,532. Both figures are above state average.
Data from the 2000 census reveal that males had a median income 48% higher than females ($70,726 versus $47,786). The per capita income was $41,241. The median income for a family was $110,268. The median household income was $96,864. A 2008 unofficial estimate places the latter at $123,619 (significantly above state average). About 1.1% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty level.
The most common ancestries are Italian (19.9%), Irish (14.3%), and German (12.0%). As of the 2000 census, the racial and ethnic composition was 90.44% White, 1.95% African American, 6.17% Asian and 2.69% Hispanic or Latino. The percentage of foreign-born residents is below the state average (10.17% versus 17.5%). Most frequently they come from India (20%) and the United Kingdom (10%).
Of the 5,272 households recounted in the 2000 census, 39.7% had minors living with them. Almost 70.0% were married couples living together. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 22.9% and 18.8%.
At the time of the 2000 census, the median age was 38 years. The major age breakdown was 27.3% under 18, 34.6% from 25 to 44, and 25.3% from 45 to 64.
The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher were significantly above state levels (32.19% and 24.47% versus 20.65% and 12.05%). Less than 4.00% had not completed high school versus 19.78% who had. Those with some college or associate degree were 19.82%.
