Closter, NJ 07624. The Honorable Judge Thomas R. Betancourt holds court sessions on the first and third Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. The court’s phone number is (201) 784-0600. The Closter Court Administrator is Bonnie Switzer. Office hours are from 9:00 am until 12 Noon and then from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. This court does not have jurisdiction over juvenile delinquency charges.
General Closter, New Jersey Details
Closter is located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States approximately twenty miles north of New York City. The Dutch had settled in Closter in the late 1600’s and by 1704 it was formally created into a borough from sections of Harrington Township. Closter slowly became a mostly middle to upper class borough, as did it’s neighboring towns, Alpine and Rockleigh. The population in Closter borough as of the 2010 United States Census Report was 8,373.
In 2010, The N.J. State Police Uniform Crime registered 63 major crimes. The types of crimes from that year were; 1 robbery, 1 assault, 12 burglaries, 34 incidents of domestic violence, and 25 cases of police force. There were not any murders, rapes or prejudice crimes. Other data unrelated to what the police registered, which does not include findings on bias crimes, domestic violence or police force, show 49 thefts as well.
You can catch a bus via New Jersey Transit to New York City on Schraalenburgh Road. It will leave you off at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. You can also get into the city on Coach Buses, which take you through the Holland Tunnel. The main county roads in Closter are: Route 501, 502, and County Route 505.
Closter has some very beautiful parks. The Closter Nature Center located in the center of the borough at 145 Ruckman Road has 136 acres of ponds, brooks, meadows and wooded areas to discover. There are plenty of hiking trails and nature walks. The park hosts monthly discourses for the general public and welcomes school groups for visits. In additions the center has a summer camp and special events throughout the year.
There are only two public schools in the Closter School District serving students in Kindergarten through eighth grades. The Hillside Elementary School is for kids from Kindergarten through fourth grades and the Tenakill Middle School serves students from fifth through eighth grades. High School age students attend grades nine through twelve at the Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest, New Jersey along with students from both Demarest and Haworth Townships. This change was made when the Closter High School was closed in 1955 due to the opening of Northern Valley Regional High School.
Emme, the plus sized model, once lived in Closter with her husband Philip. As of 2009, Bruce Harper, a former running back and kick returner who played for the New York Jets lives in Closter with his wife Nancy. Richard Hunt, a famous puppeteer who is solely responsible for inventing the character Scooter from The Muppets lived in Closter before his passing in 1992.
