Created in 1894, Cresskill is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey United States that was formed from sections of Palisades Township. Cresskill is located approximately 20 miles north of New York City and is just accross the river from Yonkers, NY. According to the 2010 United States Census Report there are 8,573 residents in Cresskill, which has a 2.14 square mile area. There were reportedly 2,318 families living there and 3,114 homes. Cresskill is recognized as a mostly upper class area with the cost of living considerably higher than the nation’s average with the average home price being $595, 763.
Cresskill is where Camp Merritt was based, a camp where American Soldiers were sent before being shipped off to World War I. In 1924 a monument was built to honor the soldiers who were stationed there. The monument was modeled after the Washington Monument, in Washington D.C.
The three major heritages with the highest percentages living in Cresskill are: 19.5% Irish, 19.1% Italian, and 11.2% German. According to the 2010 United States Census Report the majority of the residents are White at 68.95%. There is also a large community of Asians, specifically Koreans, who’s percentage increased from 18.64 to 27.64 over the past years.
The Cresskill Police Department has 26 full-time law enforcement employees, 21 of which are police officers.
In 2010 there were 39 crimes registered by The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Unit. There crimes that transpired were, 1 assault, 15 burglaries, 26 cases of police force, and 2 occassions of domestic violence. There were not any murders, rapes, robberies reported.
There are four public schools in the Cresskill Public School District. The Edward H. Bryan School is for students in grades Kindergarten through fifth. The Merritt Memorial School serves children from Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grades. The Cresskill Middle School is for kids in sixth through eighth grades. Ninth to twelfth graders attend the Cresskill High School, which according to the 2009-10 National Center for Education Statistics has 547 students. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark organizes and manages theThe Academy of Saint Therese of Lisieux, which has 225 students in preschool to eighth grades. While ther are no colleges or universities located within Cresskill, there are many closeby. With New York City being just minutes away there are alot of schooling options to consider there. Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey is only 5 miles away as well.
There are many famous residents that either currently or previously lived in Cresskill. Rick Cerone, a former cathcer for the New York Yankees, Mike Piazza, a former cathcer for New York Mets, Robert Bruce Merfield, who was a biochemist and also winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemisrty, and The R&B singer, Mary J. Blige lives there as of 2007.
