Delanco Township receives its current name from a contraction of “Delaware” and “Rancocas” (the river and creek that border the community). It was established in 1848 as a summer treat. Originally incorporated as Beverly Township in 1859, it changed to its present name in 1926. According to the Census Bureau, its total area is 3.4 square miles, of which almost two thirds are land (73.45%).

As of the 2000 census, there were 3,237 people. The population density was very high at 1,301.1 people per square mile. There were 892 families and 1,285 housing units in 2000.

Out of the 1,227 households tallied in 2000, 33.2% had children under 18 living with them. More than half (54.4%) the households was made up of married couples living together. Households composed of non-families and individuals represented 27.3% and 22.8%, respectively.

The racial composition in 2000 was 95.89% White, 1.95% Hispanic or Latino of any race and 1.92% African American. The most common first ancestries reported are Irish (20.1%), German (19.4%), Italian (15.7%), English (9.5%), Polish (8.2%), American (3.6%) and Portuguese (2.8%). The most cited places of birth for foreign-born residents are Portugal (34%), Brazil (13%), Romania (12%), Germany (7%), Korea (7%), Italy (6%) and other Eastern European countries (6%).

In 2000, the median age of the population was 37 years. Practically a fourth (24.9%) was under the age of 18. More than half (54.6%) were between the ages of 25 and 64 years. There were more people 65 years of age and older than those 18 to 24 (7.3% versus 13.3%). For every 100 adult females, there were 92.7 males.

The median income for a household in 2000 was $50,106. By 2008 the estimated median household income increased to $63,945. The median family income was $56,985 in 2000. The per capita income was $21,096. Male median income was about 40% higher than that of females ($40,727 versus $28,144). Approximately 9.5% of the population lived below the poverty line. The median house or condo value in 2000 was $111,900. This value more than doubled by 2008 to $242,987.

Delanco has 9 full-time police officers, and one civilian employee. According to the N.J. State Police Uniform Crime, 66 major crimes were committed in 2009. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 14.2 and a violent rate of 1.7.9. There were no murders that year. The reports included 2 rapes, 4 robberies, 2 assaults, 18 burglaries, 2 bias crimes, 71 cases of domestic violence and 9 incidents of police force.

A third of the males are engaged in construction (10%), metal and metal products (6%), truck transportation (6%), educational services (5%) and public administration (5%). Females are employed in health care (21%) and educational services (11%).

Data for 2010 highest education level attained by the population 25 years of age and older shows that only 9.58% did not complete high school (versus 14.15% statewide). Percentage of high-school graduates is similar to the state level (30.95% vs. 30.00%). Bachelors and graduates represent 21.47% and 10.44% (versus 20.65% and 12.05% statewide).
