East Windsor – New Jersey

East Windsor is a township in Mercer County, in the Trenton metro area. The community was named for Windsor, England. The township was formed when Windsor Township was split in 1917. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it has a total area of 15.7 square miles, practically all of which is land (99.68%).

As of the 2000 census, there were 24,919 inhabitants, five percent of which were rural population. As of the 2010 Census, the township population had increased to 27,190. Out of the 9,448 households, slightly more than a third (34.2%) had children younger than 18 living with them. More than half (55.6%) were married couples living together.

At the time of 2000 census, the racial composition of the township was 74.42% White, 14.28% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 9.55% Asian and 8.90% African American. Nevertheless, there is a significant population of undocumented Hispanic immigrants which is not counted by the census, numbering in the thousands. Some school surveys show that up to 20% of the total population in the educational system is represented by undocumented immigrants.

The major ancestries cited by the residents of East Windsor in the 2000 census are 11% Irish, 10% Italian, 10% German, 9% Black or African American, 8% Polish and 6% Asian Indian. More than 10% mention Hispanic or Latino as their ancestry (Colombian, Mexican, Central American, Ecuadorian, Guatemalan and Puerto Rican).

The median age of the population of East Windsor was 36 years in 2000. Almost a quarter (24.0%) were under the age of 18 and 8.3% were individuals 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a household in this township was $63,616 in 1999, increasing to $81,187 by 2008. Males had a median income of $50,875 versus $35,260 for females in 2000. The estimated median house or condo value in 2000 was $137,500 in 2000, more than doubling by 2008 when it was $297,898. Residents with income below the poverty level remained unchanged at 5.3% between 2000 and 2008.

East Windsor Township crime statistics report an overall downward trend based on data from 11 years. It is expected that the crime rate for 2011 will be lower than in 2009, when it was lower by 80.14% than the national violent crime rate. Likewise, the township’s property crime rate was lower than the national average by 67.14%. a comparison with the crime rates in New Jersey also show that the violent crime rate and the property crime rate were lower in this township (by 72.61% and 52.03%, respectively).

The educational attainment of the population 25 and older in East Windsor at the time of the 2000 census showed that high school graduates (including equivalency) were 21.3% (versus 29.4% and 28.6% for the state and the nation). College graduates represented 25.3% of this population (versus 22.9% and 27.4% for the state and the nation). Individuals with a bachelor’s, master’s, professional or doctorate degrees accounted for 67.3% (versus 52.7% and 51.8% for the state and the country).
