Elmwood Park was a section of Saddle River Township previously known as Dundee Lake until 1916 when it separated to create the borough of East Patterson a year later. There were 5,075 families and 7,242 housing units. City-data estimated the 2009 median house or condo value at $395,597. The January 2011 cost of living index was 24.1% higher than the national average.

Of the more than 7,000 households recounted in the 2000 census, 29.5% had minors living with them. More than half were ofmarried couples living together. Households composed of non-families and of individuals represented 28.4% and 23.2%. The median age was 38 years. Minors accounted for 20.9% and seniors for 16.5%.
