Belmar’s “E Street and 10th Avenue” intersection is famous for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Springsteen’s original keyboardist, David Sancious, lived on E Street when the band was first formed. They used to practice in his home in their pre-fame years. That’s how the E Street band got their name. It also gave rise to the song “10th Avenue Freeze-Out.”

Tony Soprano’s boat is stored in Belmar, and the MTV reality show “Jersey Shore” filmed its 9th episode in Belmar in Season one. In August, 2008, the borough of Belmar established a “sister city” relationship with Balbriggan, a town of nearly 16,000 in Dublin, Ireland.

In July of 1990, the voters of Belmar passed a referendum changing Belmar’s form of government from a three person to a four member council. They have three-year terms, except for the Mayor who is elected for a four-year term.

The Belmar Elementary School is a single school that serves as an elementary school for preschool through fifth grades, and as a middle school for grades six through eight. Belmar does not have its own high school. High school students attend Manasquan or Asbury Park High Schools. Some may also attend Academy Charter High School, if accepted on the lottery basis.
