Warren – New Jersey

Watchung was settled in the early eighteenth Century. It was organized as a borough in 1926. Its total territory encompasses 6.0 square miles. As of the 2010 census, 5,801 people called it home, down from 5,613 in the 2000 census.

The most common ancestries are Italian (16.4%), German (16.0%), Irish (15.7%), Polish (8.0%), English (6.3%), and American (5.3%). According to the 2000 census, 84.20% of the population was White, 9.85% Asian, 3.37% African American, and 2.00% Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The population density was low at 933 people per square mile, as of the 2000 census. There were 1,617 families and 2,155 housing units. City-data estimated the median house or condo value in 2009 at $688,123 versus $348,300 statewide. The January 2011 cost of living index was 26.2% higher than the national average.

As per the 2000 census, the median family income was $120,764. Males had a median income 49% higher than females ($80,658 versus $54,167). The median household income was $101,944 and the per capita income $58,653. According to City-data these had risen in 2009 to $93,389 and $52,696, respectively. About 2.2% of the population lived the poverty level.

Of the 2,098 households recounted in the 2000 census, 30.8% had minors living with them. Married couples living together accounted for 70.4%. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 22.9% and 19.0%. The median age was 43 years. Minors represented 21.9% and seniors 16.3%.

The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher were significantly above state levels (26.43% and 31.69% versus 20.65% and 12.05%). Less than 5.00% had not completed high school versus 16.96% who had. Those with some college or associate degree were 20.07%.

From 2005 to 2009 males engaged in Health care and social assistance (16%), Manufacturing (15%), Finance and insurance (11%), and Transportation and warehousing (9%). Females worked in Health care and social assistance (38%), Educational services (19%), and Finance and insurance (12%).
