Rockleigh was formed as a borough in 1923 from sections of Northvale. It was listed 13th in New Jersey Monthly magazine “Best Places To Live” in New Jersey in 2008. Its territory comprises less than one mile, very thinly populated with 548 persons per square mile.
As of the 2010 census, it had 531 inhabitants. There were 57.98 families and 86 housing units. According to City-data, in 2009 the estimated median house or condo value was $986,527 versus $348,300 statewide. The March 2012 cost of living index was 38.3% higher than the national average.
As of the 2000 census, the median family income was $157,816. Males had a median income 50.9% higher than females ($100,000 versus $66,250). The median household income was $152,262 and the per capita income $48,935. As per City-data, these had risen in 2009 to $135,082 (versus $68,342 statewide) and $36,331, respectively. About 23.0% of the population and none of the families lived below the poverty level (including no minors or seniors).
The principal origins are Irish (21.0%), Italian (16.9%), German (13.6%), and Polish (4.3%). The proportion of foreign-born residents is above the state average (20.5% versus 17.5%). As of the 2010 census, 95.10% of the population was White (versus 89.77% in 2000), 2.07% African American (versus 3.32% in 2000), 1.51% Asian (versus 3.84% in 2000), and 3.77% Hispanic or Latino of any race (versus 4.86% in 2000).
Of the 75 households recounted in the 2010 census, 32.0% had minors living with them. Married couples living together represented 70.7%. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 22.7% and 13.3%, respectively. Seniors living alone totaled 8.0%. The median age was 73.8 years. For every 100 females 18 years old and over, there were 47.4 men. Minors accounted for 16.2% and seniors for 57.1%.
Rockleigh contracts with the Borough of Northvale for security services and resources. This contemplates uniformed patrol presence in or near the Borough at all times.
The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentages with a bachelor’s or graduate degree were 20.21% and 6.51% versus 20.65% and 12.05% statewide. Less than 34.00% had completed high school versus 16.78% that had not. Those with some college or associate degree were 22.26%.From 2005 to 2009 males engaged in Health care and social assistance (20%), Retail trade (15%), Manufacturing (12%), Administrative and support and waste management services (11%), and Real estate and rental and leasing (10%). Females worked in Health care and social assistance (52%) and Educational services (20%).
