Hazlet Township was initially incorporated as Raritan Township in 1848 from portions of Middletown Township. It obtained its present name in 1967. According to the Census Bureau, it has a total area of 5.7 square miles, virtually all of which miles is land. As of the 2010 census, there were 20,334 inhabitants, down from 1,278 in 2000.

The age breakdown of the population in 2000, according to the 2000 census, was 25.5% under the age of 18, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.

The ethnic composition as of the 2000 census was 93.17% White, 5.87% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 3.39% Asian and 1.10% African American. The major ancestries cited by the residents are Italian 25%, Irish 25%, German 11%, Polish 6% and English 5%.

Out of the 7,244 households registered in the 2000 census, 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. More than half (67.2%) were composed of married couples living together. Households made up of non-families and of individuals accounted for 19.9% and 17.3%, respectively.

At the time of the 2000 census, the median household income was $65,697, and the median family income $71,361. The per capita income was $25,262. Male median income was about 60% higher than that of females ($51,776 versus $32,439). Approximately 3.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.

The most common industries for male residents are construction (11%), finance and insurance (9%), and professional scientific and technical services (7%). In the case of females, the most common occupations are health care (17%), educational services (12%), and finance and insurance (12%).

The 2000 data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that 36.8% completed high school versus 29.4% statewide. Those with some college or associate’s degree represented 27.8% versus 22.9% statewide. Holders of a bachelor’s degree were 13.2% versus 18.8% statewide. The only percentage below state level is that corresponding to holders of graduate degrees (6.0% versus 11.0%).
