Hillside Township is located in Northern New Jersey. It was incorporated in 1913 from portions of Union Township. The statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show that it has a total area of 2.8 square miles, all of it land. The population density is high. At the time of the 2010 census, there were 21,404 inhabitants, down from 21,747 in 2000. There were 84.2 adult males for every 100 adult females.

The ethnic composition in 2000 was 46.54% African American, 40.03% White, 14.50% Hispanic or Latino of any race and 3.45% Asian. The most common ancestries are Portuguese (11.0%), Polish (5.0%), West Indian (4.3%), Italian (4.1%), Irish (3.3%), and Subsaharan African (2.8%). There are 5,959 foreign-born residents (12.6% Latin America, 9.2% Europe, 3.2% Asia). This represents 27.4% of the township’s population versus 17.5% statewide.

The age breakdown of the population in 2000 was 25.6% under the age of 18, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years.
