Evesham Township’s existence can be dated back to 1688. In 1798, it was incorporated as one of the state’s original 104 townships. With 42,275 inhabitants at the time of the 2000 census, it is the largest municipality in the county. It has a total area close to 30 square miles, virtually all of which is land. The population density is very high. In 2000, most of the residents (91.26%) were White. The balance was divided among Asian (4.07%), African American (3.11%) and Hispanic or Latino of any race (1.96%).
Evesham’s residents cite the following as the most common first ancestries: Italian (24.8%), Irish (19.5%), German (12.7%), Polish (6.6%), English (5.8%), American (3.4%) and Russian (2.9%). The most common countries of birth of foreign-born residents are India (12%), Philippines (9%), Korea (8%), United Kingdom (7%), China, excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan (6%), Germany (5%) and Russia (5%).The age structure of the population in 2000 showed that almost 60% were in the 25 to 64 bracket. This is reflected in a median age of 36 years. More than a fourth of the residents were under the age of 18 and less than 10% were 65 years of age or older. There were 10% more adult females than males.
Close to 40% of the children less than 18 years of age lived in the 15,712 households recounted in the 2000 census. The type of makeup of these households was 61.2% married couples living together, 27.8% non-families and 22.8% individuals.
Income statistics from the 2000 census show that the median household income was $67,010. The median family income was $77,245. According to 2007 estimates, these figures had risen to $88,543 and $105,096 respectively. Male income was close to 50% higher than that of females ($54,536 versus $36,494). The per capita income was $29,494. The estimated value of a house or condo in 1000 was $152,700. This value more than doubled in 2008 to $331,380. People living below the poverty line represented 2.8% versus 8.5% statewide.
Evesham Criminal Stats
The first full-time Police Department was established in July of 1966. It consisted of a force of 7 officers. Currently, it is staffed by 70 sworn officers. According to the N.J. State Police Uniform Crime, 654 major crimes were committed in 2009. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 14.4 and a violent rate of 0.8. There were no murders that year. The reports included 8 rapes, 15 robberies, 15 assaults, 80 burglaries, 5 bias crimes, 423 cases of domestic violence and 84 incidents of police force.
According to 2010 data, people aged 25 and over that did not complete high school account for only 4.84% versus 14.15% in the whole state. Residents who completed a bachelor’s degree were 29.79% versus 20.65% statewide. Holders of a graduate degree represented 13.4·% versus 12.05% for the whole state.
Approximately a fourth of the male population engages in professional, scientific and technical services (12%), finance and insurance (7%) and construction (7%). About a third of the females are employed in health care (19%) and educational services (15%).
