Manasquan – New Jersey

Manasquan is located along the Atlantic Ocean, at the southern end of Monmouth County. It was incorporated as a borough in 1887 from portions of Wall Township.

The Census Bureau registers its total area at 2.5 square miles, 45.45% of which is water. It has one mile of sandy beaches between the Manasquan inlet to the south and Sea Girt to the north. The Inlet Beach is one of the finest surfing beaches on the east coast. In addition, Manasquan has the only beach dedicated to the handicapped in the Jersey Shore Area.

The population diminished between the 2000 and 2010 census from 6,310 to 5,897. At the time of the 2000 census, there were 1,635 families and 3,531 housing units. The estimated median house or condo value in 2009 was $602,979, up from $262,600 in 2000 (unofficial data). The January 2011 cost of living index was 25.3% higher than the national average.

As of the 2000 census, the median family income was $73,670. Males had a median income about 57% higher than that of females ($52,368 versus $33,333). The median household income was $63,079 and the per capita income $32,898. Unofficial estimate for 2009 place these at $89,748 and $38,939. About 3.1% of the population was below the poverty level.

Out of the 2,600 households catalogued in the 2000 census, 29.5% had minors living with them. About half (49.3%) were of married couples living together. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 37.1% and 30.2%.

The age breakdown as of the 2000 census was 23.8% under 18, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years.

The most common ancestries are Irish (33.2%), Italian (21.9%), German (17.2%), English (10.1%), Polish (6.0%), and Scotch-Irish (3.3%). The ethnic composition, as of the 2000 census, was 97.89% White and 4.48% Latino or Hispanic of any race.

The 2010 data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that 5.15% did not complete high school versus 26.61% who did. Those with some college or associate’s degree represented 25.2%. Holders of a bachelor’s degree were 20.06% versus 20.65% statewide. Those with a graduate degree were 13.97% versus 12.05% statewide.

From 2005 to 2009, males engaged in construction (17%), retail trade (17%), and professional, scientific and technical services (9%). Females worked in health care and social assistance (20%), educational services (18%), and retail trade (14%).
