Weehawken – New Jersey
Weehawken was created as a township in1859, from portions of Hoboken and North Bergen. It is part of the New York metropolitan area, across from Midtown Manhattan. It is located on the western shore of the Hudson River and is the western end of the Lincoln Tunnel.
Its territory encompasses 1.477 square miles, 46.10% of which is water. The population density is very high at 15,745 people per square mile. As of the 2010 census, it had 12,554 residents. There were almost 3,000 families and about 6,200 housing units. The percentage of renters is almost double the state average (67% versus 34%). In 2008, City-data reported the median house or condo value at $500,305 (above the state average of $364,100).
The 2006-2010 American Community Survey of the Census Bureau estimated (with a 5%-20% margin of error) that the median household income was $62,435 and the median family income $90,903. Males had a median income of $53,912 versus $50,129 for females. The per capita income was $45,206. (All the figures are in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) About 12.9% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 15.2% of minors and 20.4% of seniors.
According to City-data, the percentage of foreign-born residents is significantly above the state average (38.7% versus 17.5%). Half of the current 5,229 foreign-born people are naturalized citizens. Most of them come from Cuba (19%) and Dominican Republic (16%).
As of the 2010 census, the racial and ethnic composition was 71.85% White, 4.83% African American, 8.16% Asian, and 40.27% Hispanic or Latino. The median age was 37.2 years. The most common ancestries are Italian (15.9%) and Irish (10.2%).
Of the 5,712 households registered in the 2010 census, 20.4% had minors living with them. Almost half the households were composed of non-families. Those of married couples living together and of individuals represented 34.9% and 36.1%.
The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher were about state levels (18.71% and 10.47% versus 20.65% and 12.05%). Almost 18.00% had completed high school versus 23.82% who had not. Those with some college or associate degree were 19.05%.
