The Census Bureau records its area at 73.2 square miles, 32.90% of which is water. The population density is high with 20,065 inhabitants, as of the 2010 census, up from 15,945 in 2000. At the time of the 2000 census, there were 4,442 families and 7,931 housing units. As per unofficial information, the percentage of renters is lower than the state average (19% versus 34%). The median house or condo value in 2000 was $98,700, reaching $213,534 in 2008.

As of the 2000 census, the median family income was $51,580 and the per capita income $20,619. Male median income was 34% higher than that of females ($39,668 versus $29,576). The median household income was $45,628. An unofficial 2008 estimate placed it at $58,231. About 6.5% of the population was below the poverty line.

The racial and ethnic composition, as per the 2000 census, was 96.22% White, and 3.26% Hispanic or Latino. The most common ancestries are Italian (24.3%), Irish (18.0%), German (16.3%), English (7.7%) and Polish (6.9%).

Of the 6,179 households registered in the 2000 census, 30.3% had minors living with them. Married couples living together represented 56.8%) of the households. Those composed of non-families and of individuals were 28.1% and 22.5, respectively. Almost 11% had someone 65 years old or over living alone.

At the time of the 2000 census, the median age was 40 years. Minors represented 24.2% and seniors 17.7%. The other two major age groups accounted for 27.5% from 25 to 44 and 23.9% from 45 to 64. There were 89.8 adult males for every 100 adult females.

The highest educational level of the population aged 25 and over in 2010 shows that 15.02% had not completed high school versus 43.31% who had. Those with some college and associate degree were 24.36%. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree represented 12.03% (versus 20.65% statewide). Those with a graduate degree were 5.28% (versus 12.05% statewide).

From 2005 to 2009, males engaged in construction (13%), arts, entertainment and recreation (12%), and public administration (8%). Females worked in health care (22%), educational services (11%) and accommodation and food services (10%).
