Long Branch – New Jersey

Long Branch, is located on the Atlantic Ocean. It was formed in 1867 as the “Long Branch Commission” from portions of Ocean Township. In 1903, it was incorporated as a city. As per the Census Bureau, its total area is 6.2 square miles, almost 85% of which is land. This makes it the largest city of the county.

At the time of the 2010 census, 30,179 people called it home, down from 31,340 in 2000. The median age was 35 years. Approximately a fourth (23.8%) of the population was under 18 and 12.9% 65 years of age or older. The rest was 32.4% from 25 to 44, and 20.8% from 45 to 64.

The major ancestries reported are Black or African American (19.1%), Italian (17.5%), Irish (11.2%), Puerto Rican (9.3%), German (6.6%), and Mexican (5.4%) The ethnic composition as of the 2000 census was 68.03% White, 20.67% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 18.66% African American, and 1.64% Asian.

Unofficial 2009 data estimate the median household income and the per capita income at $51,522 and $29,115. Statistics from the 2000 census show that these were $38,651 and $20,532. The median family income was $42,825. Male median income was about 38% higher than that of females ($37,383 versus $27,026).

Approximately 13.9% of the families and 16.7% of the population of were below the poverty line (mostly Hispanic or Latino and African American residents). These figures include 23.3% of those under 18 and 13.3% of those aged 65 or over.

Out of the 12,594 households registered in the 2000 census, 27.0% had minors living with them. Households of married couples living together represented 36.9%. Those composed of non-families and of individuals were 42.4% and 34.1%.

The 2010 data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that 19.10% did not complete high school versus 32.61% who did. Those with some college or associate’s degree represented 25.50%. Holders of a bachelor’s degree were 14.66% versus 20.65% statewide. Those with a graduate degree were 8.13% versus 12.05% statewide.

During 2005-2009, a third of the males engaged in construction and 10% in retail trade. Females worked in other services, except public administration (18%), health care and social assistance (18%), and retail trade (11%).
