Metuchen was incorporated as a borough in 1900 from portions of what is now known as Edison (formerly Raritan Township). At the time of the 2010 Census, 13,574 people resided in Metuchen. The borough has a total area of 2.7 square miles, all of it land. The population density was average at 4,685 people per square mile.
There were about 5,100 housing units. The median house or condo value more than doubled between 2000 and 2009 ($195,300 versus $406,706). The January 2011 cost of living index was 23.7% higher than the national average.
The ancestries reported in 2000 were Irish (22.4%), Italian (17.2%), German (14.5%), Polish (8.7%), Irish (14.9%), English (7.7%) and Russian (5.8%). The racial composition in 2000 was 93.30% White, 7.23% Asian, 3.96% Hispanic or Latino of any race, and 3.38% African American. There are presently 1,820 foreign-born residents (6.5% Asia, 4.4% Europe, 2.3% Latin America).
The median age in 2000 was 40 years. The largest age group was that of 25 to 44 years (31.3%). Residents under the age of 18 represented 23.3% and those from 45 to 64, 25.2%. People 65 years of age or older accounted for 14.9%.
In 2000, of the almost 5,000 households 32.5% had children younger than 18 living with them. More than half the households (58.8%) were made up of married couples living together. Households composed of non-families and individuals represented 28.2% and 23.0%. Female householders with no husband present represented 10.0%.
The median household income in 2000 was $75,546. In 2009, it was estimated at $87,944. The median income for the 3,584 families was $85,022 in 2000. The per capita income was $36,749, rising to an estimated $46,641 in 2009. Male median income was $58,125 versus $43,097 for females. About 3.9% of the population was below the poverty line.

Today the Police Department has 35 full-time law enforcement employees, 28 of which are police officers. The N.J. State Police Uniform Crime registered 252 major crimes in 2009. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 19.2 and a violent rate of 0.9. There were no murders or rapes. The 2009 reports included 4 robberies, 8 assaults, 47 burglaries, 104 cases of domestic violence, 4 bias crimes and 33 cases of police force.
Independent data for 2010, which do not consider bias crimes, domestic violence or police force, show 1 rape, 7 robberies, 2 assaults, 27 burglaries, 168 thefts, and 7 motor vehicle thefts. There were no murders or arsons.
The 2010 data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that 5.91% did not complete high school versus 20.46% who did. Those with some college or associate’s degree represented 17.86%. Holders of a bachelor’s degree were 30.87% (versus 20.65% statewide). Those with a graduate degree were 20.89% (versus 12.05% statewide).
From 2005 to 2009, the most common industries for males were professional, scientific and technical services (14%), manufacturing (13%), and finance and insurance (11%). Females were employed in educational services (19%), health care and social assistance (14%) and professional, scientific and technical services (11%).
