Montville Township was originally established by Dutch farmers from what is now New York City at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1867, it was incorporated from territory set off from Pequannock Township.
According to the Census Bureau, it covers an area of 19.13 square miles. The population density is very high. As of the 2010 census, there were 21,528 inhabitants, up from 20,839 in 2000. The census registered more than 5,800 families and about 7,500 housing units. The percentage of renters is lower than the state average (12% versus 34%). Unofficial statistics for 2008 placed the median contract rent for apartments at $1,459 versus $935 in the state. The median house or condo value was estimated likewise at $731,087 versus $364,100 in the state.
According to a 2008 estimate of the American Community Survey of the Census Bureau, the median household income was $141,507 versus $94,557 in 1999. The median family income and the per capita income were $183,618 and $58,021. None of the families and none of the population lived below the poverty line, as per the 2000 census.

The most common ancestries are Italian (25.2%), Irish (9.6%), German (8.1%), and Polish (7.3%). The racial and ethnic composition as of the 2000 census was 84.95% White, 12.57% Asian and 2.55% Hispanic or Latino. Approximately 18% of the population is foreign born. Their most usual places of birth are India (17%), Taiwan (10%), and China, excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan (10%).
Of the 7,380 households registered in the 2000 census, 37.4% had minors living with them. Most of the households (71.0%) were composed of married couples living together. Those made up of non-families and of individuals were 20.5% and 16.6%.
At the time of the 2000 census, 25.2% of the population was under the age of 18, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% 65 years old or over. The median age was 39 years.
The highest educational level of the population aged 25 and over in 2010 shows that 5.41% had not completed high school. Those with some college or associate degree were 20.81%. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree represented 32.81% (versus 20.65% statewide). Those with a graduate degree were 22.80% (versus 12.05% statewide).
