New Jersey Immigration advocates marched through Newark yesterday. Starting near Penn Station and finishing their walk at the Essex County Correctional Facility, the cause of their anger.
DHS and ICE plan to install 2,700 more beds at the facility to hold federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees. Some put on orange prison-style jumpsuits. Many waived American flags. Most of the parade was singing and chanting anthems like: “No human being is illegal,” and “Immigrant Rights = Human Rights.”
Essex county received roughly $22 million last year in exchange for housing approximately 465 detainees a day as those individuals cases are pending. An agreement between County and Federal officials to expand the Essex facility’s role appears to be imminent.
