A man residing in Plainsboro New Jersey was recently sentenced to 26 months in federal prison for the part he played in an immigration law fraud conspiracy. This is according to federal prosecutors in Newark.

The man, Syed Zaidi, age 54, must also serve three years of probation after his jail sentence is served. Zaidi was sentenced last week by U.S. District Court Judge Martini.

Zaidi pleaded guilty in 2010 to filing fake documents to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and also playing a role in encouraging an illegal immigrant to remain in the United States, said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

This was only the tip of the iceberg. Evidence showed that from July 2002 through June 2009, Zaidi and other he was working with helped dozens of aliens file false petitions with immigration authorities. For example, they would argue, knowing that it was false, that the petitioners qualified for employment authorization or Green Card status because they were religious workers or possessed specialized skills as computer programming or other technical ability.

The applications were supported by affidavits from bogus employers, bank statements and tax returns which were all falsified by Zaidi and his co-conspirators. They charged each applicant between $5,000 to $30,000 to file the sham petitions. Zaidi also allegedly tried to tamper with witnesses while out on bail.
