If you are stopped by police for a traffic violation, know your rights when dealing with police but also know the best ways to keep yourself safe.

When consuming alcohol, it is always best to have a designated driver, taxicab service, or other travel arrangements lined up ahead of time, especially if you know well in advance that you will likely be drinking too much to get behind the wheel.

While most people recognize this safety precaution, some people do find themselves pulled over by officers, facing DUI or DWI charges. While in some circumstances, a mistake can be made, one New York driver recently demonstrated that not everyone learns from his or her mistakes.

A Mineola, New York, man recently pleaded guilty to DWI for the 12th time since 1981. The 51-year-old’s latest conviction stems from an accident last May, in which he hit (and injured) a 76-year-old woman who was crossing the street with her husband.

The gentleman was sentenced to six years in prison for his latest accident. At the time of the pedestrian accident, his BAC was .20 percent—that’s two-and-half times the legal limit.

As an experienced New Jersey DWI defense attorney, I’m familiar with the harsh consequences that multiple-DWI convictions carry. This example from our New York neighbors is obviously an extreme, but does demonstrate the importance of having an experienced DWI defense attorney on your side.

As always, all of us at the Law Office of Anthony J. Vecchio, LLC ask that you please drink responsibly. If you’ve had too many, or feel that there is any risk at all of having too much alcohol in your system, do not get behind the wheel.

If you are charged with DWI in New Jersey, be sure to contact an experienced DWI defense attorney for the help and guidance you need.
