North Bergen was incorporated as a township in 1843. It encompasses a territory of almost 5 square miles. It is a suburb of New York City, where more than 20% of its inhabitants work. As of the 2010 census, 60,773 people called it home. It is one of the most densely populated places in the country with almost 12,000 people per square mile. The median age was 37.1 years. Minors represented 21.5% and seniors 13.5%.
There were about 14,500 families and almost 24,000 housing units, as of the 2010 census. According to City-data, the percentage of renter is significantly above the state average (58% versus 34%). It also showed that in 2008 the median contract rent for apartments was $944 and the estimated median house or condo value $369,366.
As of the 2010 census, the per capita income was $20,058. Males had a median income of $35,626 versus $29,067 for females. City-data estimated the median household income in 2008 at $52,125. The principal ancestries are Italian (10.4%), Irish (4.5%), and German (3.0%). As per the 2010 census, 66.98% were White, 4.04% African American, and 6.55% Asian. North Bergen has a majority Hispanic population of 68.40%.
Presently, the percentage of foreign-born residents is significantly above the state average (46.8% versus 17.5%). More than half are naturalized citizens and usually come from Cuba (21%), Colombia (14%), Dominican Republic (9%), Ecuador (9%), India (7%), El Salvador (5%), and Peru (4%).
Of the 22,062 households existing as of the 2010 census, 30.3% had minors living with them. Less than half were married couples living together. Households composed of non-families and of individuals represented 34.1% and 28.4%. Female householders with no husband present accounted for 16.2%.
The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher were below state levels (18.71% and 10.47% versus 20.65% and 12.05%). More than 27.00% had completed high school versus 23.82% who had. Those with some college or associate degree were 19.05%.
The major industries in which males engage are Construction (8%), Finance and insurance (6%), Other transportation, and support activities, and couriers (5%), and Professional, scientific, and technical services (5%).
