Pemberton, previously called New Mills, became a borough in 1826, within the townships of New Hanover and present-day Mount Holly. It became an independent borough around 1894, within the limits of Pemberton Township. Unlike most towns in Burlington County, its founders were Baptists and Methodists and not Quakers.
It covers a territory of 0.6 square miles, thinly populated with 1,210 residents as of the 2000 census. City-data reports the population had increased to 1,681 by 2009. There were 316 families and 513 housing units. City-data estimated the median house or condo value in 2009 at $234,456 versus $348,300 statewide.
