Pemberton, previously called New Mills, became a borough in 1826, within the townships of New Hanover and present-day Mount Holly. It became an independent borough around 1894, within the limits of Pemberton Township. Unlike most towns in Burlington County, its founders were Baptists and Methodists and not Quakers.

It covers a territory of 0.6 square miles, thinly populated with 1,210 residents as of the 2000 census. City-data reports the population had increased to 1,681 by 2009. There were 316 families and 513 housing units. City-data estimated the median house or condo value in 2009 at $234,456 versus $348,300 statewide. It also reported the March 2012 cost of living index as 2.8% higher than the national average.

Statistics from the 2000 census reveal that the median family income was $48,500. Males had a median income 37% higher than females ($34,911 versus $25,474). The median household income was $44,063.and the per capita income $18,909. According to City-data, these had risen in 2009 to $63,362 and $28,380, respectively. Less than 8.0% of the population lived below the poverty level.

As of the 2000 census, 78.43% of the population was White, 12.73% African American, 2.40% Asian, and 8.60% Hispanic or Latino of any race. The major ancestries reported are German (17.6%), Irish (15.7%), English (14.1%), and Italian (10.7%). The rate of foreign-born residents is significantly below the state average (6.6% versus 17.5%).

Of the households registered in the 2000 census, 35.7% had minors living with them. Married couples living together represented 44.7%. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 32.6% and 26.4%, respectively. The median age was 33.9 years. Minors represented 26.8% and seniors 8.9%.

The latest data from City-data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that 83.7% had completed high school or higher, 15.5% had a bachelor’s degree or higher, and 4.3% a graduate or professional degree.
