Piscataway Township is situated in Raritan Valley. Quakers and Baptists were the first settlers when it was originally founded in 1666. It was officially incorporated in 1798. The community is the fifth oldest municipality in New Jersey.

Given the presence of Rutgers University and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the township offers superior educational and research facilities.

Its total area of 20 square miles is home to 56,044 people as of the 2010 census. There were about 12,300 families and almost 17,000 housing units. The median house or condo value was unofficially estimated at $365,643 in 2008.

As of the 2000 census, the median family income was $75,218. Males had a median income 30% higher than females ($47,188 versus $36,271). The per capita income was $26,321. The median household income was $68,721. An unofficial 2008 figure estimated it at $87,702. About 3.8% of the population was below the poverty line.

The racial and ethnic composition, as of the 2000 census, was 48.81% White, 20.31% African American, 24.80% Asian, and 7.93% Hispanic or Latino. There are about 15,000 foreign-born residents, 45% of them naturalized citizens. Their most usual places of birth are India (29%), Philippines (11%), China, excluding Hong Kong and Taiwan (7%), Colombia (6%), Korea (4%), Taiwan (3%) and Vietnam (3%).

As of the 2000 census, 12.49% of the residents identified themselves as being of Indian American ancestry. This is the fourth highest of any municipality in the country and the third highest in the state of all places with 1,000 or more individuals that identified their ancestry. Some other most common ancestries are Italian (11.4%), Irish (6.3%), Polish (5.5%), and German (5.0%).

Out of the 16,500 households recounted in the 2010 census, 34.6% had minors living with them. Sixty percent of the households were made up of married couples living together. Those composed of non-families and of individuals accounted for 24.3% and 19.5%, respectively.

At the time of the 200 census, the median age was 33 years. A third of the population was from 25 to 44 years old. People aged 45 to 64 and those younger than 18 accounted for 22.1% and 21.9%, respectively. Persons aged 18 to 24 represented 14.1%.

The 2010 data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that 8.64% did not complete high school versus 24.57% who did. Those with some college or associate’s degree represented 22.33%. Holders of a bachelor’s degree were 26.01% (versus 20.65% statewide). Those with a graduate degree were 18.45% (versus 12.05% statewide).

The most common industries for males were professional, scientific, and technical services (12%), educational services (8%) and construction (6%). Females worked in educational services (14%) and health care (13%).
