Point Pleasant – Town Info
Point Pleasant Borough, distinct from Point Pleasant Beach, was incorporated in 1920 from portions of Brick Township. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it has a total area of 4.2 square miles, 15.14% of which is water. It is home to the Point Pleasant Canal, which has two lift bridges. These can be opened as many times as 300 daily during the summer to allow the passage of boats underneath.
As of the 2000 census, there were 19,306 inhabitants. Out of the 7,569 households, almost a third (32.1%) had children under the age of 18 living with them. More than half the households (54.8%) were composed of married couples living together. Non-families households represented 30.8% and those made up of individuals 25.7%.
Point Pleasant Demographic Data
The median age of the population in 2000 was 39 years. Residents under the age of 18 accounted for 23.7%. The age ranges of 25 to 44 and 45 to 64 were represented by 30.5% and 24.8%, respectively. People 65 years of age or older were 14.9% of the population. For every 100 adult females, there were 89.6 males. The racial makeup in 2000 was 85.83% White, 10.41% Hispanic or Latino of any race, and 5.33% African-American. The most common ancestries reported are Irish (32.7%), Italian (25.2%), German (21.5%), Polish (10.0%), English (10.0%) and Scottish (2.9%).
The median family income family in 2000 was $64,798. Male median income in 2000 was more than 50% higher than female median income ($50,828 versus $32,886). The estimated per capita income in 2009 was $34,770. This is a significant increase from the $25,715 income of 2000. The estimated median household income in 2009 was $75,443, also up from $55,987 in 2000.
The estimated median house or condo value in 2009 was $362,645. This is about double the 2000 value of $159,800. The January 2011 cost of living index was 22.4% higher than the U.S. average. About 3.2% of the population was below the poverty line in 2000.

In 2009, there were 41 full-time law enforcement employees including 33 police officers. The reports from the N.J. State Police Uniform Crime for that year show that there occurred a total of 352 major crimes. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 17.5 and a violent rate of 0.6. There were no murders or rapes. Reports included 2 robberies, 10 assaults, 31 burglaries, 1 bias crime, 113 incidents of domestic violence and 41 of police force. Other reports not taken into account for the above crime rates include 300 thefts and 8 auto thefts.
The 2000 census data for educational attainment of individuals 25 and older show that 34.7% completed high school (vs. 29.4% statewide). A fifth had a bachelor’s degree (20.1% vs. 18.8%). Holders of a master’s, professional or doctorate degree were less than state level (7.7% vs. 11.0%). During 2005-2009, about a third of the males were engaged in construction (19%) and retail trade (16%). Forty percent of females were employed in health care and social assistance (22%) and educational services (18%).
