Prior to its incorporation in 1917, Sea Girt Borough was part of the surrounding Wall Township. The last shore lighthouse with an integrated keeper’s residence on the east coast was decommissioned in 1955. The summer home to the Governor of the State is located here.
It has a total area of 1.5 square miles, of which almost 27% is water. The number of residents has dwindled from 2,148, as of the 2000 census, to 1,828 in 2010.

The major ancestry groups include Irish (45.3%), Italian (22.5%), German (20.8%), English (12.8%), Polish (6.4%), and Scottish (3.7%). The percentage of Irish descendants makes it the tenth municipality with the highest national percentage and the fourth highest of any municipality in the state with more than 1,000 residents identifying their ancestry.
As of the 2000 census, the ethnic composition was 99.12% White and only 1.40% of Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 942 households recorded in the census, a fifth had minors living with them. More than half the households (59.1%) were married couples living together. People living alone age 65 years or older were 17.6%. Households composed of non-families and of individuals represented 32.4% and 29.6%.
The median age was 50 years, as per the 2000 census. The age breakdown was 20.1% under 18, 18.5% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 27.5% 65 years of age or older. For every 100 adult females, there were 82.6 adult males.
The 2010 information on the highest education level of the population age 25 and over showed that more than 60% have a bachelor’s or doctorate degree (versus 38% statewide) and only 2.54% have not completed high school versus 14.15% statewide.
