The N.J. State Police Uniform Crime registered 94 major crimes in 2010. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 59.5 and a violent rate of 2.5. There were no murders, rapes or bias crimes. The reports included 3 robberies, 1 assault, 15 burglaries, 15 incidents of domestic violence, and 16 cases of police force.
Independent data, not including bias crimes, domestic violence or police force, show 71 thefts, 2 automobile thefts, and no arsons.
Seaside Park – NJ
The Borough of Seaside Park, located on the Barnegat Barrier Island, was incorporated in 1898. It was part of Toms River Township until Berkeley Township was created in 1875.
It is a small town of only 0.8 square miles, 14.47% of which is water. With almost two miles of shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean, its main industry is summer tourism. As of the 2010 census, it had 1,579 residents, down from 2,263 in 2000. There were only 606 families but 2,811 housing units, as of the 2000 census.
Of the 1,127 households registered in the 2000 census, 16.3% had minors living with them. Households composed of non-families were more than those of married couples living together (46.2% versus 41.3%). Those of non-families and of someone 65 years old or over living alone were 38.8% and 16.1%.
At the time of the 2000 census, the median age was 47 years. The age breakdown was 14.4% under 18, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 25.1% 65 years of age or older.
The major ancestries are Irish (24.0%), Italian (23.5%), German (19.5%), English (10.7%), Polish (7.6%), and Scottish (4.4%). Only 4% of the residents are foreign born versus 17.5% statewide. The racial and ethnic composition, as of the 2000 census, was 97.79% White and 2.30% Hispanic or Latino.
Unofficial estimates place the median house or condo value at $573,880 in 2009 compared to $215,600 in 2000. The January 2011 cost of living index in Seaside Park: was 26.7% higher than the national average.
As per the 2000 census, the median family income was $58,636. Males had a median income 57% higher than females ($42,813 versus $27,333). The median household income was $45,380 and the per capita income $30,090. Unofficial 2009 figures place these at $39,731 and $28,147. About 8.6% of the population was below the poverty level.
The highest educational level of the population aged 25 and over in 2010 shows that 8.98% had not completed high school versus 31.21% who had. Those with some college and associate degree were 23.65%. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree represented 23.91% (versus 20.65% statewide). Those with a graduate degree were 12.26% (versus 12.05% statewide).
The unemployment in March 2011 was 10.7% versus 9.6% statewide. The major industries for males from 2005 to 2009 were Construction (29%), Professional, scientific, and technical services (10% males), and Real Estate and rental and leasing (8%). Females worked in Educational services (27%) and Professional, scientific and technical services (21%).
