Stafford Township, named after Staffordshire in England, was peopled by Europeans before 1700. Fifty years later, it was created from portions of Shrewsbury Township, still part of Monmouth County. Its incorporation as one of the state’s first 104 townships took place in 1798. It was the first government in what would become Ocean County in 1850.
Stafford Township has one of the three state 1904 monuments to the “unknown from the sea” as a testimony of the many ship wreck victims along the Atlantic Coast. It is the gateway to the resort communities on Long Beach Island.
