Tinton Falls was first settled as a village shortly after the Monmouth Patent was issued in 1665. It was incorporated as New Shrewsbury Borough in 1950, after breaking away from Shrewsbury Township. In 1975, it was renamed Tinton Falls.

The borough has a total area at 15.6 square miles. As of the 2010 census, 17,892 people called it home, up from 15,053 in 2000.

The January 2011 cost of living index was 22.8% higher than the national average. As of the 2000 census, the median family income was $79,773. The median female income ($37,857) was roughly 45% lower than that of males ($58,098).

The median household income was $68,697, rising significantly above state average in 2009 to $80,097 (unofficial figure). The per capita income was $31,520. An unofficial 2009 estimate places it at $39,927. About 3.9% of the population was below the poverty line.

The ethnic composition as of the 2010 census was White 75.99%, African American 11.97%, Asian 6.91%, and Hispanic or Latino of any race 7.09%. Black and Hispanic race population percentages are significantly above state average. The most common ancestries are Italian (22.6%), Irish (21.2%), German (14.3%), English (7.4%), and Polish (7.1%).

Out of the 5,883 households recorded in the 2000 census, 56.0% was made up of married couples living together, and 34.1% had minors living with them. Households composed of non-families and of individuals were 32.4% and 27.2%, respectively.

As of the 2000 census, there were 86.2 adult males per 100 adult females. The median age was 37 years. The age breakdown was 25.5% under 18, 36.4% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% 65 years or older.

Brookdale Community College and Monmouth University are both located about 5 miles from Tinton Falls. The 2010 information on highest education level of the population age 25 and over shows that almost half (44.86%) have completed a bachelor’s or doctorate degree (versus 32.70% statewide). Those with some college or associate’s degree represented 26.79%. Only 5.61% have not completed high school versus 22.75% who did.

During the period 2005-2009, 17% of the females were engaged in health care and social assistance and 15% in educational services; 13% of the males and 12% of the females worked in retail trade, and 12% and 10%, respectively, in professional, scientific and technical services.
