Tinton Falls was first settled as a village shortly after the Monmouth Patent was issued in 1665. It was incorporated as New Shrewsbury Borough in 1950, after breaking away from Shrewsbury Township. In 1975, it was renamed Tinton Falls.
The borough has a total area at 15.6 square miles. As of the 2010 census, 17,892 people called it home, up from 15,053 in 2000.
