Union Beach was formed as a borough in 1925 from portions of Raritan Township (now Hazlet). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.9 square miles, of which 3.11% is water. As of the 2000 census, the borough population was 6,649. The changes have been small in the years 2003 (6,745), 2009 (6,612) and 2010 (6,559).

The major ancestries cited by the residents of Union Beach are 22% Irish, 22% Italian and 16% German. The racial composition in 2000 was 94.45% White, 8.09% Hispanic or Latino of any race and 1.23% Asian. By 2010 the break-down by race had shifted to 91.28% White, 11.59% Hispanic and 1.45% Asian.

Almost half (43.3%) of the 2,143 households counted in this borough in the 2000 census had children under the age of 18 living with them. Only 5.5% of the households had someone living alone 65 years of age or older. The median age of the residents of Union Beach according to the census was 34 years. Teenagers represented almost a third (29.1%) of the population and seniors (65 years of age or older) 7.5%.

The median income for a household in the borough according to the 2000 census was $125,000. It decreased significantly to $58,448 by 2009, and a year later started to recuperate, reaching $81.020. The estimated per capita income in 2009 was $25,124. The estimated median house or condo value in 2009 in Union Beach was $265,341 compared to $132,800 according to the 2000 census. In 2010, 26.17% of the houses had a value in the range of $150,000 to $174,999. Almost two thirds (62.84%) of the houses were built between 1939, or earlier, and 1950.

The highest education level attained in 2010 by population age 25 of and over of Union Beach reflects that the percentage with a bachelor’s or graduate degree is significantly below state levels (7.58% vs. 20.65% and 2.26% vs. 12.05%, respectively). The highest percentage (48.12%) is represented by those who completed high school. In 2010 70.68% of the children aged 3 and older were not enrolled in school.

During the period 2005-2009, almost half the males of Union Beach borough were mainly engaged in the following industries: 18% construction, 16% retail trade, and 14% manufacturing. Exactly half the females of this borough were employed in retail trade (20%), health care and social assistance (11%), accommodation and food services (10%), and 9% educational services. Unemployment has been climbing steadily since 2000 when it was about 3.6% to reach 8.6% in 2010, with recoveries mainly between 2005 and 2008.
