In 2010, the Police Department consisted of 119 full-time law enforcement employees, including 107 police officers.

The N.J. State Police Uniform Crime registered 907 major crimes in 2010. This results in a crime rate per 1,000 residents of 18.2 and a violent rate of 3.4. The reports included 3 murders, 5 rapes, 79 robberies, 84 assaults, 203 burglaries, 403 incidents of domestic violence, 1 bias crime, and 119 cases of police force.

Independent data, which does not consider bias crimes, domestic violence or police force, show 448 thefts, 85 auto thefts, and 7 arsons.

West New York – NJ

West New York was incorporated as a town in 1898, replacing Union Township. It is part of the New York Metropolitan area. Its total territory is 1.329 miles, 24.24% of which is water. As of the 2010 census, it had 49,708 residents. This makes it one of the most densely populated cities nationwide, with 49,342 persons per square mile.

The 2010 census recounted 20,018 housing units. In the previous census it was listed as Nº 52 among the cities with the highest rate of renters (80.1% versus 33.8% nationwide). City-data estimated in 2009 the median house or condo value at $391,128. The January 2011 cost of living index was 30.1% higher than the national average.

As per the 2010 census, the median family income was $34,083. Males have a median income 19.6% higher than females ($26,703 versus $22,326). The median household income was $31,980, and the per capita income $16,719. City-data estimated these rose in 2009 to $45,164 and $25,054, respectively. About 19% of the population and 16% of the families lived below the poverty line. This included 25.4% minors and 22.3% seniors.

The percentage of foreign-born residents is significantly above the state level (65.2% versus 17.5%). Of the 9,831 present foreign-born residents, 59.2% are from Latin America.

As per the 2010 census, 62.04% of the population was White, 6.01% Asian, and 4.60% African American. It is one of the cities with a majority Hispanic population and the third statewide (78.08% as of the 2010 census). It began to be known as “Havana on the Hudson” after the large arrival of Cuban emigrants in the 1960s. Although Native Americans are only 1.50% of its population, together with Union City, they represent 38% of that population nationwide.

Of the 18,852 households registered in the 2010 census, 28.6% had minors living with them. Married couples living together and non-families were 37.6% and 37.5%, respectively. The median age was 34.8 years.

The 2010 census data for highest educational level of residents age 25 and over reveal that the percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher were significantly below state levels (11.06% and 9.40% versus 20.65% and 12.05%). More than 38.00% had not completed high school.

From 2005 to 2009 males engaged in Construction (16%), Retail trade (13%), and Manufacturing (11%). Females worked in Health care and social assistance (15%), Retail trade (14%), and Educational services (10%).
